(NBC NEWS) -- An Orange County woman claims deputies had no right to shoot and kill her dog, but deputies say they had no choice.

Around midnight Friday, a person driving by a house on Formosa Avenue called 911 to report hearing a frantic-sounding woman screaming that "someone needed to call police".

Orange County Deputies said when they arrived at the house, the resident, Natalie Walsh, came out a side door along with her pit bull.

The deputies said the dog charged at them and when they ordered Walsh to restrain the animal, she did nothing.

A spokesman for the sheriff's office said the deputies had no choice but to shoot the dog in order to avoid being bitten and that they did not violate policy.

However, Walsh said the deputies entered the fenced side of her yard and that they should have knocked on her front door first so she could have told them everything was OK.

Walsh admits she was having a loud argument with her girlfriend, but she said they worked things out between themselves.

As for her dog, she claims he did not act as aggressive as deputies describe.

A neighbor told WESH 2 News that he considered the dog gentle enough to play with his children.
