TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The head of Florida's child welfare agency is stepping down.

Florida Department of Children and Families Secretary David Wilkins announced his resignation today. Miami's regional managing director Esther Jacobo will fill in for him.

Wilkins' resignation comes on the heels of criticism leveled at the agency for a rash of recent child deaths.

Last month, 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle was murdered after being kidnapped from a Jacksonville Walmart.

Her accused killer, Donald James Smith, faces murder, kidnapping and sexual battery charges.
