VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A child wandering alone along a busy road ran into traffic and was hit by a car on Friday.

The 4-year-old boy was taken to a hospital after being hit by the tan sedan on U.S. 1 in Port Orange just south of Dunlawton Avenue shortly after 9 a.m.
Police said a witnesses saw the boy cross the busy street on his own.
Several people, including a cab driver stopped, concerned about him, but before they could grab him, the child tried to cross back.
"Traffic was coming, a car in the southbound lane, the near side lane attempted to stop, but their was no chance," said witness Dan Kane. "The child was struck by the car."
Witnesses said it appeared the child suffered a broken leg and possibly other injuries but nothing life threatening. He was apparently staying in a motel with his mother on US 1 and got out alone.
Police said the driver of the car, a young man, was not at fault and will not be charged.
