MIAMI (AP) -- A man who fatally shot a popular South Beach chef two decades ago has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

As part of a deal with Miami-Dade prosecutors, Chris Hayes pleaded guilty Monday to robbery and second-degree murder.

Authorities say Jim Breen - a chef at the Four One One restaurant - had just given a ride home to a Little Haiti dishwasher in July 1993 when he stopped to buy some cocaine. When drug dealer Chris Hayes tried to snatch $10 from Breen, Breen resisted, and Hayes shot him in the heart.

The Miami Herald reports that Hayes' accomplice, Fenel Baptiste, was arrested and later convicted of manslaughter.

Hayes became a fugitive until 2009, when he was stopped by police in New Jersey. Hayes was arrested and returned to Miami.
