DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Police in Daytona Beach said a corrections officer at Tomoka State Prison, who also worked part-time as a security officer at Daytona International Speedway during the races, stole more than $100,000 worth of NASCAR gear from souvenir trailers.

Shannon Wiggins, 44, was arrested Wednesday, however no jail booking photo is available because as a law enforcement officer, he can opt out of having his picture posted.

Police said Wiggins worked as a security supervisor during the Daytona 500 in 2012 and 2013.

In 2012, NASCAR items were stolen from a company called Racing Electronics that had a trailer and booth on site and during the 2013 race. Items were also stolen from two trailers owned by Americacrown.

Investigators said a large amount of brand new merchandise was discovered in Wiggins' home when they served a search warrant on Tuesday.

More items were found with a friend of Wiggins, who was selling the merchandise for Wiggins on eBay for a fraction of the real cost.

Speedway officials released a statement, saying "We applaud the efforts of the Daytona Beach Police Department and Chief Mike Chitwood in apprehending the suspect. At Daytona International Speedway, we take the security of the facility very seriously and continue to take every measure possible, in partnership with local and regional law enforcement agencies, to ensure that this situation doesn't occur again."
