MASCOTTE, Fla. -Police in Mascotte are investigating the death of a 27-year-old mother who officials said was killed in front of her 3-year-old.
The victim has been identified as Kristi Delaney. Investigators didn't say much about who was responsible, but said it was a domestic dispute.
Detectives said Delaney's 3-year-old daughter was in the house on South Bay Lake Road at the time of her death and ran down the street to her grandmother's house to tell her "mommy" was sick.
"The 3-year-old daughter was with her in the place," said Sgt. Kristin Thompson of the Lake County Sheriff's Office. "(She) walked down the street and notified the relative that something was wrong. The relative came down here and discovered (the body)."
The neighbor said she heard a "horrifyingly loud scream" when the body was discovered.
"This scream was terrifying. It was so loud," Brittany Evans said.
Police said they know who the killer is, but he has not been caught. However, investigators said they do not believe the killer poses a threat to anyone in the community.
According to Lake County records, Delany asked for an injunction against Johnny Shipman last year.
In 2011, she asked a judge to force Shipman to pay child support for her daughter, but the judge denied that request. That case was recently reassigned.
Lake County deputies took over the case at the request of the Mascotte Police Department. For hours, investigators gathered evidence from the home.
