NAPLES, Fla. -- While chimneys don't get too much use in Southwest Florida, they're still not a great way for burglars to break into homes.
That didn't stop a man in Naples from trying.
Someone called 911 to report the man trapped in the chimney at 579 Neapolitan Way. Investigators say the caller was the trapped man's accomplice - who moved their vehicle and then phoned for help.
Firefighters got there around 2 a.m. Wednesday and found the man stuck in the 18-foot chimney of the unoccupied home.
The burglar was found shoeless, with one foot dangling into the fireplace.
Firefighters were able to pull him back up the chimney with a harness attached to a ladder truck. It took about 30 minutes to get him out.
The man didn't suffer any serious injuries, but the chimney did sustain some damage.
"I think this Santa was trying to remove things rather than bringing presents in, " homeowner Mike Whitley laughed. He caught a flight to Florida shortly after the alarm company and police told him about the incident.
Whitley, who was at a second home in Lexington, Kentucky when it happened, had a contractor stop by Wednesday to assess the repairs needed.
The suspect, who still hasn't been named, was taken to the Collier County Jail.
