ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- There is a search underway to find the man wanted in connection with his wife's murder.

Ashley Atherley was found with her throat slashed inside a San Bernardino, California apartment on Sunday.

This past spring, she relocated to the area from Hillsborough County with her husband, Edly Atherley.

"This man is an animal. He has a rotted heart and he needs to suffer for what he did to her," said her mother, Lucia Robles.

San Bernardino police believe Edly Atherley murdered his wife sometime between November 29th and December 1st before going on the run.

"Just always happy... always smiling and could always put you in a good mood," said Billie Huffman of the victim.

The long-time family friend, who worked with Ashley before she moved away said that she always hid the darker side of her marriage.

"Ashley put on a happy face," she said. "She wanted everybody to think that she had the perfect family."

Edly Atherley, a Port Charolette High School graduate, had been arrested for domestic violence in 2008.

"She was in a domestic abusive relationship and she was on her way out. She was almost out. She had a travel pack. She was ready to go. She got her own place," said her father, Scott Hall. "From the last attack she was scared, scared for her life. We wanted her to come home...but he got to her before we had that chance."

While there have been sightings of Atherley in California, San Bernardino police have alerted authorities in Hillsborough County because of his ties to the area.

"His family has been very cooperative with us. We have been in contact with them several times and at this point they would like to see him turn himself in also," said San Bernardino Police Detective Carl Williams.

The couple has two children together, but they were not in the home with the murder took place.

Anyone with information related to the crime or the whereabouts of Edly Atherley is urged to contact Det. Al Tello at (909) 384-5747 or Sgt. C. Williams at (909) 693-6665.
