(WBBH) -- You learn so much in high
school, but sometimes the most helpful things are left out -- especially
when it comes to money, investments, credit cards, taxes and loans.
The financial world can be a maze.
"After school everybody is like money, money, money," South Fort Myers High School senior Reginald Pearsey says.
But when you graduate high school, do you really know how to manage that money?
Gabrielle McDonald says a lot of her classmates don't know a thing about savings.
McDonald and a few of her classmates at South Fort Myers High School
might be the exceptions. They're in a business academy which dives deep
into the often complicated world of finances.
"Honestly I didn't know anything before I came into this class,"
admits Caitlin Florence, a senior at South Fort Myers High School.
They say this course covers more finances than the economics class everyone has to take.
Now a group of lawmakers, including republican State Representative
Heather Fitzenhagen from Fort Myers, wants to require every student to
take a stand-alone financial literacy class before graduating.

"If it's a requirement, I think a lot of people would graduate and not have to think about getting into debt," McDonald says.
So how would this bill affect our local school districts if it becomes law?
Lee County says it has the qualified teachers. It can't say for sure
how much work would go into preparing the course because the bill
specifies the department of education work with non profit organizations
to develop a curriculum.
The bill reduces the number of electives students need to graduate to
make room for this mandatory class. That might mean teachers of
elective courses would be reassigned.
Collier and Charlotte Counties gave similar answers. Each district
says it's keeping an eye on the bill which is still a long way from
The budding financial experts at South Fort Myers High School think the class is a worthwhile investment.
"It can help you, it will benefit you, and it's not a waste of time," Pearsey says.
