ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Three men were pulled out of the water about five miles from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge after their boat caught fire Friday night.
Sources at the scene say the men left John's Pass and were headed to Port Charlotte when their 38-foot boat started having engine trouble. One of the men checked on it and that's when he saw the fire.
When they couldn't put it out, they grabbed life jackets and called 911 and abandoned ship.
"It's a little scary when you have to abandon ship and you look back and see the boat engulfed in flames," said one of the boaters. "We heard a couple of explosions. It's just a good thing that somebody picked us up."
Rescue crews found the men about 30 minutes after they jumped in the water. They put out the fire and then the boat sank.
One of the men suffered a burned hand and the other two were not injured.
