COVINGTON, Ga. -- Authorities say a former assistant high school basketball coach is accused of sending sexually inappropriate text messages to a 15-year-old student at the school.

Newton County sheriff's officials say 27-year-old James Levert Carter faces a charge of enticing a child for indecent purposes.

Sheriff's Deputy Courtney Morrison said the 15-year-old girl discovered sexually inappropriate text messages on her iPod last month. Morrison said investigators were able to retrieve messages from Carter's cell phone.

The Newton Citizen reports that Carter was an assistant boys' basketball coach and a special education paraprofessional at Newton High School. It wasn't known early Wednesday whether he has an attorney.

Sherri Davis-Viniard, a spokeswoman for the Newton County School System, said he no longer works at the school.
