SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The top prosecutor for Savannah and surrounding Chatham County has lost re-election to his former chief assistant.
District Attorney Larry Chisolm, a Democrat, was defeated at the polls Tuesday by Republican Meg Daly Heap. Unofficial returns showed Heap with 56 percent of the vote.
Heap was among several assistant prosecutors who left the district attorney's office under Chisolm.
During his four-year term, Chisolm faced accusations of mismanagement and discrimination. He also was blamed for botching the prosecution of a 2003 child killing this year when a Superior Court judge threw out a murder charge against a convicted child molester. The judge said prosecutors violated the suspect's right to a speedy trial.
Heap was endorsed by Chisolm's predecessor, Spencer Lawton, who retired after 28 years as district attorney.
