ROSWELL, Ga. -- Firefighters in suburban Atlanta are preparing to donate one of the city's fire trucks to a New York town that was devastated by Superstorm Sandy.
Roswell Fire Chief Ricky Spencer tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the bright red engine will be on its way to Island Park, N.Y., later this month.
Authorities say Island Park's volunteer fire department lost an ambulance, two vehicles and thousands of dollars in equipment when the storm slammed into the town of around 5,000 last month. The headquarters for the Island Park firefighters filled with at least 6 feet of water.
Spencer said officials typically auction unneeded fire trucks such as this one, but decided to donate it after learning of the storm victims' plight. The Roswell City Council approved the plan this week.
