SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Savannah's mayor and other city officials are meeting this week with a visiting representative of the French government.

Denis Barbet was appointed French consul general to the southeastern U.S. over the summer. He's paying his first visit to Savannah on Monday and Tuesday.

City officials say Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson will meet with Barbet during his trip, as will business leaders from groups such as the Savannah Economic Development Authority and the Georgia Ports Authority. The visit will give Savannah and France a chance to look for potential commercial and cultural ventures.

With its famous annual St. Patrick's Day celebration, Savannah is perhaps best known for its international ties to Ireland. But city officials say Savannah has also a French community of about 500 residents.
