GRIFFIN, Ga. -- A young girl is recovering from severe injuries after being attacked by her family's pet pit bull dog in Spalding County.

Griffin police Capt. Dwayne Jones says the 5-year-old was flown to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston for treatment of severe facial trauma.

Jones tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the dog was latched onto the girl's face in the family's fenced-in backyard in Griffin when officers arrived.

Jones said the girl's grandmother was trying to pull the dog off the girl when Cpl. Stan Phillips arrived and shot the dog to prevent further injuries, possibly saving her life.

Police said the dog's remains were taken to the Spalding County Animal Shelter and will be tested for rabies.

Griffin is about 40 miles south of Atlanta.
