SAVANNAH, Ga. -- School bus drivers in Savannah are suing the Georgia Department of Labor over its decision to cut unemployment for contracted school workers who were laid off.
WTOC-TV reports the Teamers Local 726 filed the suit in the Superior Court of Chatham County. They say state law does not authorize the denial of unemployment benefits to employees of for-profit companies that contract with educational institutions for non-educational purposes.
The television station reports the union is planning to stage sit-ins and protests at the Georgia Department of Labor offices in Chatham County and in Atlanta.
The union represents 500 school bus drivers, monitors and mechanics in Savannah.
