ATLANTA -- A Lawrenceville couple who fraudulently claimed to be exempt from paying taxes for a decade have been sentenced to federal prison.

Authorities say 46-year-old Stephen Paul Thomas has been sentenced to five years and his wife, 51-year-old Patricia Denese Anderson has been sentenced to four years and three months.

The couple owned a business in Duluth and stopped filing federal tax returns in the 1990s. The couple claimed to not be United States citizens and said they were exempt from paying federal taxes. Officials say the two used fake tax identification numbers to establish bank accounts to hide their money in.

In 2009, the two filed false returns claiming $420,000 from the IRS, and told the federal government to use a fake $100 bond to pay any of their debts.
