SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The wife of Chatham County's former coroner has written the county a check for $126,000 as law enforcement officers continue to investigate financial practices in the offices.

The Savannah Morning News reports that a letter accompanying the check said the funds were intended to go toward resolving "accounting discrepancies" uncovered during an audit.

Coroner James C. Metts Jr. resigned Dec. 14 and his wife, Paula, wrote the check two weeks later. The accompanying letter from Metts' son, James C. Metts III, stated the total amount in dispute was understood to be $141,000 and the county could expect an additional $15,000 within two weeks.

County Attorney Jon Hart said officials haven't decided what to do with the check, since the possible legal ramifications of accepting it have to be discussed.
