De'Marquise Kareem Elkins
BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The Brunswick Police Department has announced 2 arrests have been made in the Thursday killing of Brunswick 13-month-old Antonio Angel Santiago.
De'Marquise Elkins, 17, and a 15-year-old male are both being charged with first-degree murder. The 15-year-old's identity is not being released due to his age.
Elkins and the 15-year-old male were taken into custody early Friday morning, according to Brunswick Police Department Chief Tobe Green.
Elkins is being held at the Glynn County Detention Center.
Susan Bishop with tears in her eyes delivered a balloon where a small memorial is sits at the intersection where the 13-month-old was fatally shot.
"It hits to the core of my heart and it does everybody. If you have a heart it just hits you right here," said Bishop.
Relatives of Elkins are saddened at the toddler's death, but maintain that teen is innocent.
"I am devastated, I am sad because they got the wrong person," said Katrina Freeman, who claims to be Elkins' aunt. "I hate what happened to that baby because no baby deserves to go through that. But at the same time, they are taking someone to jail that is innocent."
Freeman said Elkins was at her home at the time of the shooting.
"I am 100 percent positive that De'Marquise Elkins was not at that crime scene. He was at my residence."
