BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The Brunswick community is still coping with the killing of 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. The 17-year-old accused of the murder posted statements and pictures on social media suggesting he was affiliated with the street gang the Bloods.
Police will not say if they believe the shooting was gang-related, but it turns out that gang violence may have occured before in this small Georgia community.
Eddie Collins, he has gone from running the streets to running a barber shop after a life of drugs, guns and multiple convictions that put him behind bars for 7 years.
"I would say there are gangs in every city, every town, you just might not know about it."
Collins said, he started working the streets of Brunswick at 16 and while he would not list off any of the local gangs in the area, he said robbing people is part of the protocol.
"9 times out of 10 the offender is after money, oh yeah that's the motive of the whole thing," said Collins.
Ladarius Lawrence,18, Lorenzo Lawrence, 21, Randall Whipple Jr.,22, are all in custody after court documents say they shot Tyler Harris two times while attempting to rob him on one December night at Townsend Park.
They are all facing multiple felonies including armed robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. There are also charges in their paperwork for gang affiliation though the trio was not indicted on those charges.
"Anytime you're dealing with drugs the streets and guns, it's liable to go wrong," said Collins.
According to court documents, Ladarius and Lorenzo Lawrence entered a not guilty plea earlier this month in response to the indictment charges.
