CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A Clayton County police officer is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital after an officer-involved shooting that killed a man on Friday evening.
Officer Melvin Snell, 39, is listed in critical but stable condition.
The incident happened around 10:30pm Friday night near the intersection of Upper Riverdale Road and Tara Boulevard after a patrol car was struck as a result of an unrelated collision.
According to Clayton County Police, a woman in a minivan with three small children inside rear ended Officer Snell's patrol car.
She said she was trying to get away from her estranged husband who was in a car behind her. Her vehicle was rear ended.
Officer Snell put the woman and children in his patrol car. Investigators say the estranged husband fired several shots. Officer Snell was struck in the right shoulder and right neck area.
Another officer happened to be patrolling the area at the time of the incident and responded to shooting. The officer observed a Clayton County officer down on the scene and opened fire on the suspect, killing him.
