FORT STEWART, Ga. -- Fort Stewart has a new top general in charge.
Maj. Gen. Mike Murray took command of the southeast Georgia Army post Friday and its more than 21,000 soldiers.
The job puts Murray in command of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, which has deployed soldiers four times to Iraq and once to Afghanistan in the past decade. About 5,000 of its soldiers remain in Afghanistan.
Murray comes to Fort Stewart from Washington, where he served as the Army's director of force management. Murray told soldiers at his change of command ceremony Friday to expect challenges in the years ahead as the Army downsizes and grapples with steep budget cuts imposed by Washington.
Murray succeeds Maj. Gen. Robert Abrams, who is being promoted to senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.
