GRANTVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- A western Georgia police chief has been suspended for a week without pay after he was criticized for not letting city officials know about a trip he made to Arizona to meet with Joe Arpaio, the sheriff in Maricopa County, Ariz.

Arpaio is widely known for his tough-on-crime initiatives and unusual jail rules.

The Times-Herald reports that Grantville Police Chief Doug Jordan met with the Arizona sheriff and then expressed his hopes to establish Grantville's own drug team.

City Manager Johnny Williams says Jordan violated a policy of informing him of anything that's not routine, and he doesn't consider the trip to be routine.

The city council voted 2-1 to suspend Jordan.

Grantville Mayor Jim Sells says he's appalled with the suspension, and fully supports the police chief.
