SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A 16-year-old coastal Georgia teen accused in his father's death has pleaded guilty to malice murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

Preston Phelps entered his plea Wednesday in Chatham County Superior Court.

Investigators have said the body of 64-year-old Thomas Phelps was found in the garage of his home on Talahi Island in early September of 2012.

Prosecutors have said Phelps, then 14 years old, assaulted his father and hit him in the back of his head with an ax.

Phelps was charged as an adult with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false statements, tampering with evidence and criminal solicitation to conceal a death.

Phelps' mother, Judith, is charged with concealing a death, evidence tampering and lying to police. She's scheduled to appear in court next week.
