GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) -- North Georgia is home to one of the country's most Republican congressional districts and will be a key battleground in next year's GOP primary for the state's open U.S. Senate seat.
None of the race's major Republican candidates has a direct link to the area, which represents a combined 20 percent of GOP primary voters in the state. The race will be watched nationally as Democrats look to thwart efforts by Republicans to take control of the Senate.
In the GOP primary are U.S. Reps. Paul Broun of Athens, Phil Gingrey of Marietta and Jack Kingston of Savannah, along with former Secretary of State Karen Handel and former Dollar General CEO David Perdue, cousin of former Gov. Sonny Perdue. Democrat Michelle Nunn, daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn, also is running.
