His family settled in Deer Park, NY on Long Island in 1966. Cornish grew up in Deer Park, attending public schools there and graduating from Deer Park High School in 1981.
While growing up, he was active in the Boy Scouts of America, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in 1981, according to Cornish's campaign site.
After high school, he attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY. Upon graduation from Kings Point as a Marine Engineer in 1985, he accepted a commission as an Ensign in the US Navy Reserve. Cornish went to work for a large property insurance company as a Field Engineer in the Philadelphia, PA area. Cornish resigned my position with the insurance company in late 1991 to begin a sailing career as an Engineer in the US Merchant Marine Fleet. He joined the American Maritime Officers Union (AMO) at this time. Cornish became a Florida resident in 1992 and in 1994 purchased his first home in Palm Coast. In 1996 he resigned his US Navy Reserve Commission, and received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy Reserve.
In 2000, he earned my Chief Engineer's License and began sailing in that position.
Cornish married in 2004. Cornish and his wife moved from Palm Coast to Saint Augustine, where they currently reside, in 2007.
His hobbies include riding my motorcycle, restoring and repairing my cars, and traveling with family and friends.
