JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Her students adore her. Her fellow teachers compliment her strength. Katrina Rock at Bayview Elementary in Jacksonville is our new Buddy Check 12 success story.
Her name is perfect for her personality. As one of her students says with pep, "Miss Rock's name is Miss Rock because she rocks!"
Rock is married with one daughter, and she said her family -- and her students -- mean everything to her.
So good thing she did Buddy Check 12. On the 12th, she said, she was checking and found a lump that felt "hard and it was different." She compares it to a key on a calculator, only more firm.
At first her doctor thought it was just part of her fibrocystic breast tissue. But more tests found it was cancer.
Rock said when she heard the word, "cancer," she couldn't hear anything else. She pretty much froze. But the nurses and doctors explained to her that we're long past the years when breast cancer was a "death sentence."
Plus, she says, she started praying immediately.
"I asked God to help me through this," she said, and "He did."
Rock is a star to our Buddy Check program because on every 12th she emails and Facebooks 30-40 people.
Her message: "Check today. Don't delay."
