(ABC NEWS) -- Previous studies have found that green tea lowers your risk of heart disease.

A survey shows that people who drink either green tea or coffee everyday decrease their risk of one type of stroke.

Researchers surveyed more than 83,000 Japanese adults about their consumption of these beverages and then followed them for 13 years.

The report published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association found that participants who drank one cup of coffee or two cups of green tea every day lowered their risk of a stroke by 20 to 30 percent. That's compared to those who seldom drank them.

And, as the amount of these beverages consumed increased, the risks of a stroke decreased even more.

Researchers say this is the first study to examine the combined effects of both drinks.

Making green tea or coffee a regular part of your diet may be a small but positive step to help prevent stroke and heart disease.

Scientists suspect the drinks benefit cardiovascular health because they may partly help blood clots from forming.
