(ABC NEWS) -- Scientists say an experimental immune system therapy is showing promise in adults with a form of leukemia that is often deadly.

The therapy tweaks the cancer patient's own immune cells to recognize and attack cancer cells.

In a study involving five adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, researchers found the therapy shrunk tumors and sent the cancer into remission.

The study is published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
