ALTON, Ill. (KSDK) -- Many people will hit the rivers and lakes this Memorial Day weekend and there are a few things they need to do to stay safe.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Ryan Christensen said the most important thing people can do is make sure all adults and children are wearing life jackets that say they are Coast Guard approved. You need to also make sure they fit properly so they will be effective in the water.

Boaters should be aware that water temperatures are still cool and rivers have swift currents.

Petty Officer Christensen said that people who plan to go boating should tell someone staying on land what their plans are in case something happens. The person on land can give that key information to the Coast Guard if they need to conduct a search.
