Jesus Ramirez said while his glasses help him see, they also hold him back as a Marine.
"You don't want to give it your all or play 100 percent because you feel like,'I don't want to break my glasses and then I need to go get a new pair,'" Ramirez said.
He had PRK vision correction surgery to allow him to see long distances. The WaveLight EX500 is touted as the world's fastest vision correction laser.
"With this laser beam that is shaped like a cylinder, we can deliver the energy precisely not only to the center of the cornea but also to the periphery of the cornea, and so the normal shape of the cornea is maintained," said Dr. Ella Faktorovich of the Pacific Vision Institute in San Francisco.
The procedure dramatically reduces a patient's risk of seeing halos or glare at night.
Because the new laser can quickly deliver stable and permanent correction, it virtually eliminates the need for patients to return for a touch-up procedure.
The treatment takes seconds, reducing the problem of dry eye tissue. And recovery is dramatically shortened.
Ramirez is expected to enjoy 20/20 vision in just one to two weeks, instead of the traditional three months.
"I saw immediate improvement," said Sam Garetano, who had the procedure a few months ago.
He said he had 20/20 vision in two weeks.
"The idea of having a quicker recovery made PRK a much easier choice," Garetano said.
How did the procedure go for Ramirez?
"It was nice and easy," he said.
