MIAMI -- U.S. immigration authorities say one of their detainees in Miami has been hospitalized with bacterial meningitis.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Nestor Yglesias says the detainee at the Krome Detention Center was diagnosed after being taken to the hospital Oct. 21.

The detainee remained hospitalized Monday. Yglesias says officials have "no reason for significant concern of disease transmission outside or within the facility."

Yglesias says that "out of an abundance of caution," detainees in several housing units have been separated from each other temporarily. The Miami-Dade County Health Department also was notified.

The detainee's identity was not released.

Symptoms of the usually severe infection include sudden onset of fever, headache or stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light and confusion.
