The high cost of 15 pounds

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The holidays are right around the corner, and so are those extra pounds. For that reason, people usually have two or three different sizes of clothes in their closets. On average, 15 pounds translates into two dress or pant sizes. 

While it's cheaper to pick up a meal from a fast food restaurant, the money spent will be in the long run.

A new wardrobe with five work outfits and three weekend outfits, will cost you on average about $376.

Dr. Steven Hodgett with Baptist Health says weight gain, even 15 pounds, can off set a number of diseases.

"Problems like diabetes kick in or blood pressure even in young population, 25-30 year olds see high blood pressure with early weight gain, medication, treatments, doctors visits, hospitalizations later in life," says Dr. Hodgett.

Medication for diabetes isn't cheap. People with diagnosed diabetes spend about $200 a month on prescriptions. Between just those two things, that's about $3,000.

Dr. Hodgett says over your life... health costs could add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

When you ask most people how much weight they want to lose -- they usually say 15, 10, or even just those last 5 pesky pounds. Losing weight takes time and effort -- but how much does it cost?

The secret to losing weight -- isn't really a secret at all -- the easiest way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you take in.

"Weight loss in the short term, can be expensive as healthy in terms of dieting, and exercise, going to the gym," says Dr. Hodgett.

Gym memberships here on the First Coast range from $10 to more than $99 with a personal trainer. On average, the cost is about $400 dollars a year for a gym membership. But on websites like Groupon, there are coupons for many gyms.

Just like with gaining 15 pounds, wardrobe usually change. Those eight outfits still add up to about $376.

With the gym membership and the clothes, that's about $776 dollars a year. Then there's the food. Healthier food is often more expensive.

"But those numbers fail in comparison. But the most important thing with the weight loss is keeping it off long term," says Dr. Hodgett.
