By Jeannie Blaylock First Coast News GRENADA -- Women on the First Coast have done so well with Buddy Check 12, we are now inspiring women around the world to do Buddy Check. Three years ago, a local group of doctors, "CHORES," asked me to go to Grenada and teach women about breast cancer. It turned out to be quite a challenge. Grenada is a gorgeous island near Venezuela. But many of the people there still believed if you get breast cancer, it's punishment for your wrongdoings in life. Often, women with breast cancer would hide in their houses and not even go out to buy food. But we are making progress. I went back to Grenada to keep teaching and see if we've made a difference. The good news is we're starting to break down barriers and women are actually talking about breast cancer openly. Instead of calling it "the beast," they're talking about the fact you can overcome it. I went on several television stations and talked about self exams. One TV station even showed a long segment demonstrating a self-exam. (I had gotten the tape from the American Cancer Society.) So it's encouraging to see women become informed. It is giving them the power to save their own lives. And here on the First Coast, we know Buddy Check 12 is a lifesaver. For free Buddy Check 12 kits, call our partner, Baptist Medical Center, at (904)202-CARE. Visit the Buddy Check 12 section for more information.
