COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A 16-year-old at a local football camp died after a morning practice.
According to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the football team from Fitzgerald High School in south-central Georgia was holding its football camp at Florida Bible Camp, near High Springs. They arrived Friday.
After this morning's practice, the sheriff's office said, 16-year-old Donteria J. Searcy was found unresponsive in his cabin at about 11:15.
Searcy was a rising junior defensive lineman for the team, according to the school's website.
He was transported to Lake City Medical Center, where resuscitation efforts failed and Searcy was pronounced dead.
His teammates and his coaches are mourning his death today.
"The whole team loved him, and it's just not going to be the same without Searcy," said teammate Stepman Stevens.
"He's a very good player, and an even better person. If you didn't know him you liked him, and if you knew him, you loved him," said Coach Randy Garrett.
Foul play is not suspected, and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
