JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol believes alcohol is to blame for a fatal crash that happened Tuesday evening on northbound Interstate 295 near the Dunn Avenue exit ramp.
Seventy-year-old Bessie Mae Williams was driving her 2004 Toyota Corolla northbound on the off ramp from I-295 northbound to Dunn Avenue, according to a crash report from FHP.
When Williams tried to turn left onto Dunn Avenue she failed to see a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 50-year-old James Wilson.
Williams' Corolla hit Wilson's car, spinning it onto the grassy median.
During the crash, a 73-year-old passenger, Alma Lynch, was killed. FHP said both Lynch and Wilson were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Rescue personnel transported Williams to Shands Jacksonville with serious injuries.
