JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Another victory came Wednesday for those who don't want to see a longer runway at Craig Airport.

Two groups who were in favor of a longer runway at the airport withdrew their appeal of a federal court's August decision, which blocked the runway extension.

Jacksonville City Councilman Clay Yarborough sent this email reply to a constituent, which was obtained by First Coast News:

"We received this positive communication today from (City of Jacksonville General Counsel) Cindy Laquidara related to the Craig Field litigation: 'Please note that the Craig case is over; after we [the City] won at the trial level, an appeal had been taken but has today been voluntarily dismissed.'"

The groups, one of which was Sky Harbor Corporation, sued the City in August in hopes of forcing the lengthening of the runway. They claimed the shorter runway was a safety hazard.
Neighbors in the area lobbied hard against an extension. They worried about extra traffic and claimed it was profits not safety that was at issue.
The City agreed and a federal court in August ruled in the city's favor.
