CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission conducted a multi-agency operation at Camp Blanding that led to the arrest of six convicted felons.
The operation, named "Operation Gun It" teamed investigators from FWC with deputies from the Clay County Sheriff's Office and federal law enforcement agents, according to a news release from Karen Parker, Public Information Officer for FWC.
Parker said the operation targeted convicted felons hunting with firearms at the Camp Blanding Wildlife Management Area.
Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is a second-degree felony.
Those arrested are:
- Claude Ware, 34, Tampa.
- Edward McCormick, 38, Hampton.
- Royce Smallwood, 62, Orange Park.
- Marvin Dunlap, 53, Middleburg.
- Douglas Thaxton, 43, Middleburg.
FWC officials said felons may not possess modern firearms, however they are allowed to hunt with archery equipment or traditional muzzleloaders.
