GAINESVILLE, Fla. - A Pittsburgh Steelers running back and kick returner has been arrested, according to a release from the Gainesville Police Department.
Just before 8:30 this morning, witnesses told officer they saw Christopher Rainey and a female get into an argument over Rainey's cell phone, the release says. Officers later determined that the woman is Rainey's girlfriend of nine months.
The girlfriend got into Rainey's roommate's vehicle, and the release says that Rainey started arguing with her and tried to pull her from the vehicle.
Rainey slapped the woman across her face, according to the report, and both he and the woman fell to the ground.
The woman was able to run away, but witnesses told police that Rainey chased after her because his cell phone was still in her bag.
Rainey grabbed the woman's bag and the pair once again fell to the ground, the release says.
Multiple people reported seeing the incident, and Rainey is now charged with one count of simple battery (dating violence).
This isn't the first time that the former Florida Gator has been arrested. Back in October 2010, Rainey was charged with aggravated stalking. At the time, officers said Rainey sent a text message to a female telling her it was "time to die."
