James Leon Jackson
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man has been arrested in the 1984 murder of a 10-year-old girl.
James Leon Jackson has been arrested for the murder and sexual assault of 10-year-old Tammy Welch, Jacksonville Sheriff John Rutherford announced Tuesday.
Tammy was found behind 8050 103rd Street. Her father was in the US Navy.
DNA was retested with a Department of Justice Grant that JSO was awarded in April.
"Without the money to look at these cold cases, this could have gone unsolved for another 28 years," said Chief of Detectives, Tom Hackney.
"We're never going to stop solving these cases. You will see legal action on our part, charges will be filed," said State Attorney Angela Corey.
Tammy's family no longer lives in Jacksonville, but her sister posted a note on her Facebook page thanking JSO for solving the case, saying she hopes it gives their family closure.
