JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Getting exercise into a busy day isn't easy, but soon you will be able to do it for free every Friday in downtown Jacksonville.
It is called Fitness in the Plaza and it is being put on by the City of Jacksonville, The Seymour Group and St. Vincent's Healthcare. The idea is to get people up and moving and make it easy for them to get a nice workout in during a busy day. Organizer, Donteacia Seymour, says an added bonus is that it willl get people downtown.
The classes are around lunchtime, so people working can use their lunch hour to get in a quick workout.
The classes are start in April and are only on Friday. The 1st, 3rd and 4th Friday of every month will follow this schedule:
-11:00 a.m. is Silver Sneaker Hour for those who are older, but still want some exercise
-11:50 a.m. there is a Nutrition Series on how to make good eating choices.
- 12:15 p.m. is an Extreme Fitness class for those who are aiming to get their heart rate up!
On the second Friday of every month, the entire two hours from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. is focused on kids.
"We want to teach them(kids) and instill this in them now so when they are adults, they are not having a hard time trying to figure out how to have a healthy and nutritious lifestyle," says Seymour.
Moody Chisholm the CEO of St. Vincent's Healthcare says with 75 million Americans that are obese, any chance to get people up and moving is great.
"I think it is a great opportunity to get at least the folks here in the downtown community to inspire people throughout the city of Jacksonville to focus their children on getting at least an hour of activity a day," says Chisholm.
Fitness in the Plaza starts on the first Friday in April and will run through October 26th.
