BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla. -- The Bradford County Sheriff's Office arrested a reserve deputy on a domestic battery charge Sunday.
According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, deputies were originally dispatched to a BP gas station in Keystone Heights to investigate a 911 hang-up call at 5 a.m. Sunday.
Further investigation revealed a domestic dispute had escalated into physical altercation between Ronald Gassaway, a newly sworn reserve deputy, and his wife. The Sheriff's Office did not say who dialed 911.
Gassaway voluntarily went in for questioning and was arrested after investigators determined that he was withholding information. He has been suspended from any law enforcement duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
Bradford County Sheriff Gordon Smith stressed the office's dedication to the community in a written statement:
"It is difficult to investigate and arrest one of our own; however the Bradford County Sheriff's Office will take whatever steps are necessary to maintain the trust of our community and the integrity of the Sheriff's star."
