GILCHRIST COUNTY, Fla. -- Two men are assumed dead after they dove into the Suwannee River to rescue a child.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office Dive Team was requested to assist the Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office with a search for two men suspected of being taken by the Suwannee River Monday, according a release from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
The Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office responded to Log Landing around 8 p.m. Monday night, in reference to two men that had allegedly jumped in the river to assist a distressed 8-year-old swimmer.
The two would-be rescuers became distressed themselves which lead to two more citizens diving into the Suwannee River in an attempt to rescue all three swimmers.
The child was brought safely to shore by the latter citizens, but unfortunately the two men were not able to get out of the river, according to the CCSO.
Officers from the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission sent several boats and crews to the river to assist the GCSO in their search.
An initial search lasted for 14 hours, but did not lead to recovering the two men. A multi-county search is ongoing.
The names of the missing men are not being released at this time pending further investigation.
