  • BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- Police are following all leads as they try to piece together the events that led to a 13-month-old being shot and killed.

Two teens, 17-year-old De'Marquise Elkins and his alleged 15-year-old accomplice are charged with murdering 13-month-old Antonio Santiago. Six days after the shooting, First Coast News is learning more about what possibly happened during that dark day.

"We believe that the location and the victims were both random," Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering said.

There are still many questions that need answering, but Doering said they are making progress in the investigation.

"There is some information that is somewhat gang related, but it does not yet lend itself to conclude that is gang related activity or motivated," Doering said.

The investigation is widening, as multiple law enforcement agencies are trying to figure out how and why this happened.

"Searched more residences yesterday, executed more search warrants, more physical evidence has been recovered and other witnesses have been identified," Doering said.

Investigators said they do not consider the baby's mother, Sherry West, as a suspect at this point. Public Defender Kevin Gough, who is representing Elkins, has requested West's medical records.

"She might have been suffering from delusions or hallucinations at or around the times of these events and that might affect her ability to recall events accurately," Gough said.
