JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Stephen Merritt, 45, was arrested for aggravated assault, shooting deadly missiles, and criminal mischief and transported to jail.
Jacksonville Sherriff's Office responded to reports of shots fired at the intersection of W. Ashley street and N. Jefferson street in Jacksonville Friday night.
According to JSO reports, the suspect was driving his truck when a cab driver cut him off in traffic.
Merritt became angry, sped up to cut the cab driver off and slowed down. The suspect admits to shooting at the victim with his .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol.
Merritt said he was just about to take off when something hit the side of his truck. He never saw the victim with the gun but assumed he had been shot at.
He then chased after the cab with the intent to get the cab's tag number but he grabbed his firearm from behind the seat, "just in case".
Reports say when when Merritt caught up with the cab and got near the victim's vehicle he put his gun out the driver's window and fired twice at the victim because he, "didn't want to give him another shot".
The suspect saw a marked police car behind him with his lights on but he continued to flee the scene because he was "gonna dip".
JSO reports states that the passenger that was with Merritt had no involvement in this incident.
The passenger indicated that the victim threw something at Merritt's truck, striking it, but he never saw the victim with a gun.
The victim identified Stephen Merritt as the person driving the truck and the one who shot at him.
