JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A home intruder was killed early Thursday morning after allegedly breaking into a home and getting shot by Donald Palmer, 23, who lives at the residence with his mother.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office responded to 2200 block of Cypress Landing Drive, where Austin Glendenning, 24, was found shot on the floor inside the home, according police.
JSO's investigation revealed that Glendenning and Cameron Tallon Smith, 21, went to Donald Palmer's residence to allegedly commit burglary.
According to police, the two suspects jumped the fence in the backyard of the residence and once they were inside the fence, Glendenning entered the home via a rear sliding door that he knew was open based on previous visits. Smith remained outside near the sliding door.
Glendenning allegedly got into a fight with Palmer and that's when Glendenning sprayed Palmer with pepper spray and hit him with a metal pipe that he brought in with him.
Palmer was able to get away from Glendenning, retrieve his gun from his bedroom and shoot Glendenning twice, according to police.
Police said Glendenning was pronounced dead at the scene.
Smith was later interviewed by the homicide office after contacting an unknown person shortly after the shooting, advising that he had information on this investigation.
During the interview, Smith admitted to jumping the fence to Palmer's residence and being at the rear door of the residence when Glendenning entered the home. He also told police that he fled the area after hearing someone screaming and gunshots.
Smith was arrested and charged with felony murder and armed burglary.
In addition, a search warrant was served on Thursday to Palmer's residence and during the search a firearm was found with an altered serial number. The warrant was limited to the Palmer's bedroom.
According to police, it appeared that the serial number had been melted and altered.
Palmer was interviewed and arrested on separate drug charges and for committing alteration or removal of firearm serial number.
