Columbia County Sheriff's Office deputy shot an armed man allegedly making threats

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. - An early morning police involved shooting injured one Friday.

Deputies with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of an armed man threatening to harm himself and law enforcement around 1:00 a.m., according to a press release from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

Justin Ferguson was in the front yard of his home on the 300 block of NW Lamar Place armed with a handgun the released stated.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation Unit were requested to respond to Ferguson's residence. However before they could arrive, Ferguson allegedly attempted to run past deputies and towards neighboring homes.

Since the 36-year-old suspect had been making threats, a deputy fired one round from his issued shotgun, striking Ferguson, according to the release.

Ferguson was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital for medical treatment.

Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter requested the assistance of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in the investigation of the police involved shooting.

In accordance with Columbia County Sheriff's Office procedures, the deputy that fired at Ferguson has been placed on administrative leave.
