JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Turkish-Americans gathered at a local park Sunday to voice opposition to Turkey's government.
The group planned the impromptu meeting at Ed Austin Memorial Park on the heels of recent news about Turkish protesters facing violence from Turkish police in Istanbul.
The group was led by Cigdem Crawford, president of the Turkish-American Cultural center of North Florida.
"We are gathered here not as any political group, not as any religious group, only concerned citizens for Turkey," Crawford said.
Turkish citizens in Istanbul were protesting the demolition of a park, and the protests turned violent.
According to Halil Gerger, a member of the gathering, the Turkish government wants to dismantle parks to discourage people from congregating in large, open areas.
