JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Last month's job report looks good for people living in Florida. The unemployment rate dropped from 7.5% to 7.2%. Still, hundreds of thousands of people are without jobs.

This week, there are many ways people looking for a job in Jacksonville can apply.  One of those is the 2013 Job and Resource Fair at the Prime F. Osborn III Convention Center. Mayor Brown and Congresswoman Corrine Brown will host the event.

More than 100 companies and organizations will be on had for local job seekers -- including representatives from First Coast News. There also will be a series of job readiness workshops.
The free sessions are designed to improve applicant's interview skills.

A few tips for people looking to attend the fair.

  • First impressions are very important.
  • Stand out but in a good way. This includes making eye contact while talking, having a firm handshake, and listening to what the prospective employer has to say.
  • Also, attendees should do their research on the company and show the employer why the job is a good fit.
  • Applicants should ask questions. This shows interest in the company.

Career Coaches say 80 to 90 percent of people get a job through networking.

The event is from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday.
