JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Casey Leatherman is not happy about the prospect of her Middleburg family having to take a 20% pay cut for the next three months.

That is on the horizon for nearly 7,000 local military and civilian employees, who during the week of July 8 face the first of eleven weeks having to take one day a week off without pay.

"What 20% of your life do you decide to cut out," said Leatherman whose husband is a sheet metal mechanic at NAS Jacksonville.

At that base alone more than 6,100 people have been put on notice that unless something happens they will be working without pay for 11 days thrrough September.

The Florida National Guard is facing the same thing. Statewide more than 1,000 people will be on furlough with hundreds alone here in Jacksonville at the Florida Air National Guard center near JIA.

Leatherman said talk of furloughs has been off the radar, but she wants people to know they are real.

Her fear is next year and what could happen.

"We have no guarantee that they won't try to continue it on after first of fiscal year, October 1," said Leatherman.
